Holiday Travel Tips

Holiday Travel!
The holidays are upon us and whether you’re going to visit friends or family (or are heading out for a surprise vacation!) your holiday experience is bound to be memorable! We’ve compiled our team & partners’ top travel tips to help make your travel experience as smooth as possible! Enjoy the holidays and thank you for flying to/from ILM!

Allow Plenty of Time
This tip is short and sweet–Please make sure you give yourself more than enough time to travel to the airport, park the car, check-in, get through the airport security checkpoint and onto your flight. Remember–TSA and airlines advise travelers to arrive at least two hours prior to flight departure to ensure there is plenty of time to complete each step of the airport process. The holidays are the busiest time to travel–don’t get to the airport late and risk missing your flight!

More Parking Options!
The number of travelers utilizing ILM is increasing, which means there is more demand for parking. Our ILM employees were kind enough to move to a new offsite parking lot; allowing ILM to add even more (close-by) parking options for our travelers. Our team wants your travel experience flying to/from ILM to be as stress-free as possible!

“Where should I park?” and “How much is parking?” are some of the top questions our ILM airport staff receives. Our team pulled together some of our Top Parking Tips:
Become Familiar with All of Your Parking Options—Did you know ILM recently opened a new parking lot for travelers? It’s called North Daily and is located just past the terminal by the rental car lot. Review the map to see where all of the parking lots are located.
Check Parking Space Availability Online—You can now visit ILM’s parking page and see how many spaces are available in each lot. You can also see which lots are full, or close to being full. Planning ahead helps ensure your plan A and plan B are ready to go…which means less time circling around looking for a space.(Woohoo!)
Bring your Parking Ticket Stub with You—or Take a Picture of It. Just in case you forget which lot you parked in, the parking attendant can review your ticket stub and help point you in the right direction!

Traveling with Food
Traveling for the Holidays? Wondering if you can bring your famous squash casserole with you? Review these handy tips from TSA:

Know the rules: Please be aware that creamy and spreadable foods, like gravy, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, jam and beverages must follow the 3-1-1 liquids rule. These are limited to travel-sized containers that are 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) or less per item, which must be placed in a 1 quart-sized, zip-top bag. If you are taking larger amounts, you’re more than welcome to pack these items in a checked bag. After all, you don’t want to show up to dinner empty handed.

Solid foods, like dry stuffing, fresh cranberries, turkey, bread, baked potatoes, baked goods, pies, fruits and vegetables are allowed through the security checkpoint in your carry-on bag. You can also pack them in your checked bag. In case you are wondering, you can travel with your spoons and forks in carry-on, but pack the knives in your checked bag!

Traveling with Medicine
One of the more popular questions TSA gets from travelers is: “Can I travel with my medication?” The answer is yes, with some qualifiers. Watch this Video for More Info. Travelers should know that both over-the-counter and prescription medications are allowed through the checkpoints. You may need to declare certain medicines to the security officers at the checkpoint for inspection.

Terminal Expansion
Monteith Construction and the terminal expansion team have been hard at work! Phase 2 of ILM’s terminal expansion is on track and will continue through summer 2020. This 2nd phase includes expansion of the airline ticket lobby, ticket counters, and ticket offices. During this phase, there will be more room for the check-in kiosks, the ticket counters will change, and the color scheme will be refreshed. Never fear, ILM’s southern coastal charm will be retained, with elements of wrought iron and wainscoting. While adding room for passenger growth, additional space will also be added to welcome a potential fourth airline and charter operators. This way, ILM is ready for a new airline when they choose to provide service to ILM in the future. During the second phase, the public will notice construction work as we expand the airline ticket lobby, ticket counters and ticket offices. The construction inside of the building, for the terminal expansion, will begin after the holiday season.

Monteith Construction was also awarded the contract for phase 3 of the terminal expansion. The project is progressing nicely and we are thrilled to build capacity; ensuring our travelers have More Room To Coast.
