Phase 2 of the Terminal Expansion Breaks Ground

Monday May 6th, elected officials and community stakeholders helped ILM ceremoniously break ground to mark the beginning of the second phase of the terminal expansion.  This phase 2 of the expansion project includes expansion of the airline ticket lobby, ticket counters, and ticket offices.  It will also add an additional ticket counter for a potential fourth airline.  Phase 2 of the terminal expansion project will conclude around the summer of 2020.  Once complete, approximately 15,000SF of new space will be added for airline operations and passengers.

The 3rd phase, occurring approximately winter 2019-winter 2022, will include expansion of the TSA checkpoint, a new concourse, gate seating, and restaurant/retail space.

TSA and ILM Offer Top Travel Tips

Traveling this spring and summer?  Beth Walker, Federal Security Director of TSA and Gary Broughton C.M, Deputy Airport Director of ILM offer these Top Travel Tips:

  • Leave Prohibited Items at Home:  Unsure what you can bring?  Review the list of what is allowed in carry-on bags and checked bags.
  • Allow Plenty of Time –two hours – to park, check-in, check your bag and go through security during this busy time of year.  Airlines are using larger aircraft when flying to/from ILM.  These larger aircraft are able to service more passengers and meet the growing demand at ILM.  We’re thankful to see this increase in capacity that our community has desired.  The increase in seats, as well as additional flights, results in an increase in travelers going through the security checkpoint.  It is important travelers allow plenty of time to arrive at the airport.  In particular, wait times peak when numerous flights are departing around the same time.  At ILM, our “rush hour” occurs in the morning between 5:30am-8:30am.  It is particularly important for travelers to allow ample time to travel to the airport, find parking, check-in and go through security.
  • Remember the Liquids Rule: You are allowed to bring (1) quart sized bag with travel-sized containers that are 3.4 ounces or less per item in your carry-on bag. Learn more about the liquids rules such as what you can bring in a carry-on or checked bag.  Traveling with medications? TSA allows larger amounts of medically necessary liquids, gels, and aerosols in reasonable quantities for your trip, but you must declare them to TSA officers at the checkpoint.  Learn more about special procedures.
  • Be Prepared: Each time a TSA officer has to open a carry-on bag due to prohibited items, it slows down the screening process for you and everyone behind you.  So, leave prohibited items at home, allow plenty of time to get through security, and follow the 3-1-1 rule.  Following these tips will facilitate the checkpoint experience and reduce potential travel stress.
