Fall/Winter News: Safe Holiday Travels & Plan Ahead, Self-Checkout Parking

Safe Travels this Holiday Season

When the time is right for your next trip, we look forward to seeing you at ILM.  Until the coast is clear, it’s important for all if us to take steps to protect ourselves and others.  Here at ILM, we have implemented enhanced safety measures and cleaning protocols.  For example, you can expect to see numerous hand sanitizer stations throughout the airport, plexiglass/sneeze guards, as well as socially distanced rocking chairs and coastal-themed social distancing floor markers.  Airport employees are wearing masks and travelers should wear masks or face coverings too.  Learn more about ILM’s safety measures and enhanced cleaning protocols, as well as steps travelers can take, on our ILM Safe Travels webpage

Our airline partners at American, Delta, and United are committed to a clean and safe travel journey.  Whoever you fly, ILM’s airlines are safer than ever. Learn more about how each airline is enhancing the travel experience from pre-flight check-in, to boarding, to while onboard the aircraft.

The Harvard School  of Public Health recently released a report which shows the impact these safety measures have on travel.  Transmission risks of COVID-19 during airline flights are very low and below other routine activities during the pandemic such as grocery shopping or going out to dinner, when using face coverings and taking other steps, according to researchers at the Harvard School of Public Health.  Read the full article.

Plan Ahead, Self-Checkout Parking

At ILM, we’ve made parking easier, safer and more convenient than ever. All six lots are now open, and you can check space availability in each lot on ILM’s website.  You’ll also limit contact by paying electronically, without passing your credit or debit card to a parking attendant.

Terminal Expansion Progress

ILM’s terminal expansion continues and contractors are currently on schedule. The ticket counter, ticket lobby, and ticket offices have all been updated and expanded.  This expanded area provides additional space for a potential fourth airline, and also for the future growth of ILM’s three existing airlines.(photo above showcases the new ticket area.)

Contract three recently began and work includes completion of the lower level masonry construction, continued utility installation and steel framing.(work in progress photo below) The current schedule expects the roof and exterior walls to be completed and electrical power to be turned on in the first half of 2021. Currently, portions of the new concourse are slated to open December 2021 with total project completion by 2023.

ILM also has plans to incorporate public art into the new terminal.  Local artists are designing the terrazzo floors in the terminal as well as a large sculpture that is going to be installed in the concourse’s main open space. The public art pieces will capture the spirit of the coastal Cape Fear Region through permanent installations that welcome ILM’s patrons, enhance the facility, and contribute to the local cultural aesthetic.
